A Few of My Favorite Things: 2009

So I wasn't planning on doing a year-end favorites list, but I've been thinking about the year and how much it sucked and some of the cool stuff that's happened as well.

Favorite Album: Two Suns by Bat For Lashes
( I got to see Natasha Khan twice this year and was mesmerized by the show's creativity and her voice)

Favorite Concert: I definitely went to more concerts this year than I've been in my entire life (The Virgins, Morrissey, Bat For Lashes, Black Star, No Doubt, and the Vivian Girls) but seeing No Doubt for the first time, was pretty much amazing.

True Showman-ship from every member including their tour support. I really hope the rumors are true and that they're cooking something up for 2010.

Favorite Book: Hungry by Crystal Renn.

I've been on a autobiographical kick this year. Crystal Renn is currently the top plus-size model in the industry and I can't wait for the January issue of V Magazine to hit shelves, the shoot is awesome

Favorite Blog:
  • Gossip- the always hilarious Slacker Chic, Mrs. M never disappoints in giving the snarkiest commentary on the latest celebrity goings on, giving us a glimpse of her teen years, or sharing her love for ScarJo
  • Fashion- Trenddoll, Tee Fisher runs this blog and really knows her stuff, whether talking "streetwear" or high fashion
  • Gadget- Gizmodo has turned me into more of a geek than I already am, whether it's the Apple Conference liveblogs or just news on new gadgets and stuff
  • Life- Galadarling's blog is just adorable and she gives advice on pretty much anything

Favorite Fragrance: Miss Dior Cherie, I kinda want to swim in a pool full of this stuff, it smells so good and I got it as a birthday present for myself.

Favorite New Show: (tie)Parks and Recreation, the show's first season was a little bumpy but with such great talent like Amy Poehler and Aziz Ansari, I knew it could find its stride and it definitely has.

  • True Blood ( I know it started in '08 but I didn't start watching it until this year, it's got plenty of sex and violence which is why it stomps a mudhole in Twilight's ass. Not to mention the fact that True Blood has, Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd; I knew something was serious when the man invaded my dreams (he was teaching military strategy in Swedish, I woke up very happy)

Photobucket

Favorite Reality Shows: I've definitely cut back on the garbage that is, reality shows at least network reality, but no matter how hard I try, Vh1 and Bravo keep managing to reel me in.

  • For the Love or Ray-J, congratulations Ray-J you really know how to pick 'em

Photobucket

  • and the Real Housewives of New Jersey, prostitution whore!

Photobucket

Favorite Movie: Star Trek, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana pretty much made the movie for me

Favorite Ugly Shoe with my name: The "Carsi" by Jessica Simpson

Favorite Viral Video: I'm actually the type of person who ignores viral videos, I'm a deviator who tends to hate stuff that everyone else typically loses their shit over, but I couldn't ignore this.

Happy 2010 everyone let's get those Stunnah shades on

New Music from New Young Pony Club

so excited I've been waiting for what seems like forever, the new album is due out in March. I hope the dates for the UK and US release are close and we're not stuck waiting for months to get this album stateside.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! But I think I'll miss this one this year.

I've definitely not been a celebratory mood this entire year (getting super depressed, feeling like I'm going no where in life, having friends do not very friend-like things, and finding out that my dad has more in common with Tiger Woods other than being black [wink, wink, nudge, nudge], the list goes on and on) Even though I've come to not care it doesn't mean that you shouldn't, so Merry Christmas from myself and from Dolly,

now enjoy this SNL classic and the evermore classic "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses.

Dear Pat Smear:

If you ever decide on have a biopic made on you or of the Foo Fighters (I'm going to ignore the mediocrity of What We Do is Secret), I elect Fred Armisen for the job.

They Don't

make female rockstars like they used to. Am I wrong?:

I Miss...

Save Ferris :-( I remember attempting bangs like Monique's in the 9th grade, it was a disaster.

"The World is New"

and my absolute favorite "Goodbye"

File Under...

The fuck?!?

I thought the music world couldn't get any weirder after this happened, but of course I'm always getting thrown off guard, especially when Jessica Simpson is allegedly dating Billy Corgan!?!?!?!?!?!?!? But then again James Iha formed a band with one of the Hanson brothers so yeah sure, ok perfectly normal, perfectly healthy.

Seriously

"There is something demoralizing about watching two people get more and more crazy about each other, especially when you are the only extra person in the room."
~Sylvia Plath

I hate having to endure my coupled up friends, especially when they know it makes me uncomfortable and then say "Oh we're making her uncomfortable" and then continue to make out.

I don't care who knows...

I really enjoyed the Nanny Diaries, despite the (mostly) bad reviews. I can't help but love Scarlett Johanssen.

I've watched it about 10 times. Don't Judge

OMG

some of the best (and funniest) news I've heard so far:
1) According to NME, Major Lazer is being turned into a cartoon on Adult Swim

I have no doubt that it will be hilarious and that Andy Milonakis will have something to do with it because of this hilarity

Major Lazer "Zumbie" ft. Andy Milonakis from Mad Decent on Vimeo.

enjoy the latest video for "Keep It Going Louder" feat. Nina Sky and Ricky Blaze

Major Lazer- "Keep It Goin Louder" from trunk animation on Vimeo.

and 2) Martin Lawrence and Jamie Foxx are reprising their hilarious 90s alter-egos, Shenehneh and Wanda, respectively.

If you couldn't tell from my header, I'm a big Sheneh fan. The only thing that could make me more excited for this project is if there are appearances by Yo-Yo and Simbi Kahli as Keylolo and Laquita; and Jim Carey as Vera De Milo

Finally!

After being pushed back numerous times and going through two name changes from "Koko B. Ware" to "Dreamdate" and now "Ultraviolet" the new Kid Sister is finally dropping this month :-)

I dragged Mickey and my brother along to see Kid Sister and Vampire Weekend, last summer at Central Park Summerstage

during a torrential Downpour, we all had to go to K-Mart afterwards for new clothes but it was kinda worth it.
Enjoy some of the classic (and 2 year old :-/) Pro-Nails

now if only she'd put out a new video...

Genius!

If you don't watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I'm very sorry for you. It's one of the best shows to have come out in the past couple of years. Last nights episode was probably up there as one of the best ever because the gang tries to make money off "As seen on TV" type inventions like:

1) Kitten Mittens

and 2) The Dick Towel

and not only was it the funniest thing I've seen in a while but it's real! Buy your Dick Towel at

I'm so there

before the WB and the CW; WPIX, along with WWOR (formerly UPN) were dumping grounds for syndicated classics and movies. Every Halloween, WPIX would air Elvira Mistress of the Dark providing campy, trashy goodness

(one of my favorite scenes: the heel of Elvira's thrown stiletto lodging itself in her evil uncle's forehead that and the casserole making and eating at the picnic, and the boob tassles can't forget those).

Well they're not airing Elvira Mistress of the Dark but they are featuring Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira as the host of the Chiller Theater this Saturday, I'll be watching like any self-respecting agoraphobic hermit.

seriously does this woman actually dabble in the dark arts? how has she not aged and don't get me started on the boobs, they're legendary.

Mid to Late 90s Pop...

that I may or may not have cried to it ( I was pretty emotional from the 4th to 8th grade, what can I say)

1st up "Breaking All the Rules" by She Moves, at some point early in life I still believed in love and that one day my dreams would come true and all these songs would mean more to me because finally it has happened to me (CeCe Peniston joke...)

All Saints "Never Ever" loved this song especially while getting over crushes, sigh... Why All Saints never hit it bigger over here has always been a mystery to me.

Take That's "Back For Good" featuring some of the best 90s boy band music video formulas "I miss/love you so much that I'm going to wail about it in the rain"

Real McCoy "Runaway" "I hope someone wants to run away with me" (thoughts from the 6th grade me, I wish I could go back and tell myself to abandon all hope)

Last but not least, "Close to You" by Fun Factory. This was the song that I always felt was "so true" whenever I had a ridiculous crush.

so there you have it songs that shouldn't really make me cry, that do (and I'm not a crier, at least not anymore, unless I'm watching an episode of Dog the Bounty Hunter {yes I'm fully aware of the craziness of that and I don't care})

It's the Chanel of babies!!!

I caught the news of Robin Thicke and Paula Patton expecting their first child via Slacker Chic

I'm excited to say the least
this kid is gonna be adorable, I love couples that are down with the swirl (fuck you Louisiana!)

In the words of Edina Monsoon "Mixed Race Babies... It's the Chanel of babies!!!"

Geek Fashion !!!

Holy cuteness, whoever designed these deserves some sort of award beyond appearing on blogs. Forreal

I caught this Tetris dress on Jezebel, this is such a fun dress.

seeing the Tetris dress reminded me of the 3-D glasses dress I had seen on Gizmodo a few weeks ago; that was sold on Etsy.

I can totally picture this on some New Wave loving girl at a Devo Concert in the early 80's.

Perfection

no other words to be said...

No one expects...

the Spanish Inquisition! (sorry Monty Python nerd joke)

or Tracey Morgan to cry and get emotional while being interviewed, because we're used to him just taking his shirt off.

Tracy has been on a bit of a promotional tour for his new book "I Am the New Black",

where he talks about his life growing up in Bed-Stuy and the Bronx and selling crack for a brief period, as well as his success with SNL and 30 Rock.

He was on NPR earlier this week talking to Terry Gross and spent most of the interview getting pretty emotional.

Listen to the interview here: Tracy Morgan on Being 'The New Black'

can't wait to read this...

funny side story: My cousin once went to the 40/40 club with friends and a friend almost got into a fight with Tracy. Oddly, Tracy got kicked out that night.

Isn't It Kinda Ironic...

that Mattel is using sampling Aqua's "Barbie Girl" for their Barbie Pink Ticket Party sweepstakes commercial considering they sued the group years ago for turning Barbie into a "sex object" but I guess it's ok because it's ok to sexualize girls at younger and younger ages. :-/

ahh the summer of '97 how I miss you...

Can't Help it...

I know her character on Gossip Girl Vanessa gets a lot of shit for being annoying and not being able to keep her mouth shut, but I seriously can't help but like Jessica Szohr (probably b/c she's the closest to being "ethnic" on the show) and her style off the show. Sure she has the occasional red carpet mis-step but it's her regular, walking around outfits that I love. This look w/ co-star and boyfriend (are they still dating?) Ed Westwick from earlier this year is probably my favorite so far it's just really laid back and simple.

here she is discussing her style choices with Nylon Magazine:

Question of the Day:

"Do Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon have to pay or wait the 2 years for a Birkin bag? It's named after their mom after all"

my question has an answer: "These days, Jane Birkin gets the bags at 10 percent off and has set up a charity. HermĂšs makes a contribution every year. " [Source]

10 percent... really that's all???!!!???

Forgotten Female Rappers of the Late 90s

well 1999 in particular...

in the 9th grade I had a friend who was obsessed with Sole, unfortunately she never blew up like my friend swore she would or should have... Well she's been married to Ginuwine and has been steadily pushing out kids.

also where oh where has Rah Digga gone? the last we heard of her was Busta Rhymes "Touch It" super remix

Come back Harriet Thugman!!!!!

More Childhood Memories...

So I was catching up on the Nylon Blog the other day and came across their post about Sanrio revealing Hello Kitty's parent on their facebook page.

Say Hello to George and Mary White.

of course then this caused a little trigger of childhood memories they names reminded me of none other than George and Martha

I can't believe I forgot about them! I used to read them every night before going to bed as a kid along with Bearenstein Bears books. I wasn't aware that it was turned into a show, but HBO is currently not airing it :-( I miss my childhood, can I be 4 years old again, pleassssse?

Oh Snoop

"I still watch the show to this day and it makes me laugh so hard. She has to be one of the funniest people on TV."
-Snoop Dogg ( discussing Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances)

I love when my favorite celebrities enjoy unexpected things, I can seriously imagine Snoop giggling while watching. Thank God PBS has been showing this on Saturday nights for an eternity.

Dear Mischa,

I'm sorry about this:

The Beautiful Life Canceled

this:

"a bedraggled figure on the streets"

and this:

Homecoming Review

as well as the fact that I've not only watched both, but I've also DVR-ed them for future viewings. Hope she gets something soon, I have a soft spot for people who've had psychiatric hospital stays and fellow "man-voicers":

Insomnia means...

watching RuPaul's Drag Race and Dog the Bounty Hunter Free On Demand

drag queens and Beth's boobs

(which got a sweet writeup on The Boobs) two of this world's treasures...

Skrippah Shoes

(I could never pull them off ever, but a girl can look and dream) then relishing in one of the queen mothers of lucite heel wearers, Shuana Sands who's managed to incorporate them into her everyday wears.

and wrapping it up with some Three's Company

(I find it mildly amusing that one of the first images that came up was for the episode I just finished watching)

Sweet Saturdays

This past Saturday i woke up at 7 (I'm not a morning person at all!) just to get my hands on the latest YSL Manifesto tote, after missing out on the last two hand-outs I wasn't about to miss this again. I got on the LIRR and met up with my favorite duo, Nancy and Nicole; we got to see some of the leftovers of the aftermath of the Jay-Z tribute concert (ugh wish I could've gone but watching on Fuse sufficed) at Penn Station from the night before.

While we waited outside the tents fashion blogger extrodinaire Susie Bubble of the Style Bubble
walked past me after coming from the Lacoste show.
I've been looking through the collection online and this is pretty much my favorite look, I love the blues and yellows that are being used [more of the collection available from New York Magazine]

I tried to not completely mob the girl handing out the totes like everyone else had, felt bad for her; that's definitely a scary situation to be completely crowded by people like that.

Afterwards I went to Borders and picked up the new Who What Wear book

(Hurray for those Borders coupons), got to bug my brother at his dorm at SVA, watched some movie being filmed outside Madison Square Park, and made a trip to Whole Foods (making that Homer Simpson drooling sound)

I made it back in time to Penn to grab the latest issue of i-D before the final boarding call for my train home.

I love the issue but one thing about European fashion magazine that I keep forgetting is the amount of boob they show and while it doesn't bother me personally, it's awkward trying to flip through it while on a train. Hehe. The issue is really great, the editorials amazing and a lot of the titles used for features are from Michael Jackson songs. There's behind the scenes video of Chanel, Arlenis, Jourdan, and Sessilee from the i-D site. All in all a pretty decent day.

Can We Make This Happen? Please.

Ghostface Killah
is dedicating some tracks on his new album to Natalie Portman.

"I read in some interview she did in something called Interview magazine that she likes obscene rap music," Killah says. "When I read that, it was, like, 'Oh, shit, she would love the shit I got right here on this album!' It was wild, 'cause I remember her as the little girl in The Professional, and now she's all about the wild shit." Killah added, "Yo, if you see her, give her my number. Tell her we gotta make some music together."
