July Roundup

My summer's been relatively quiet, and I haven't done very much other than work and taking my intro classes for my Master's program. So any time that I've gotten to go out and have some fun I've taken advantage of it.

I've been following Gabi over at Young, Fat and Fabulous for a little over a year now and have really come to admire her personal style as well as so many of the plus size bloggers that she's friends with. So a few months ago when I heard that she had organized a plus-sized fashion blogger conference I was ecstatic, although many of the events weren't open to the public (just a few lucky bloggers) she offered something just as great for the readers, by announcing that there would be a Meet& Greet between the bloggers and readers. I RSVPed as soon as I found out.
I brought Nancy and Nicole along with me because social situations always freak me out (whether I really want to be somewhere or not) They weren't too familiar with the bloggers but still had such an amazing time at the store the event was held at RedressNYC. I wish I had talked to more of the bloggers but I was so nervous ( I need to work on that)

The bloggers with some of the ladies of Re/Dress.

Nancy and I fell in love with the little lounge area in the back of the store, so cute.

Me and Gabi, who is officially the very 1st MTV TJ! so excited for her, follow Gabi at @MTVTJ

It was really great to meet such a amazing group of girls who were all really positive and suportive. Can't wait to go back to Re/Dress, especially during the Fashion's Night Out event they're holding next month. To see more from the YFF Conference

A few weeks later we celebrated Nicole's birthday.

on our way to the restaurant listening to The Bawhs aka Rick Ross.

Nikki's bff Christian and his bf Noel. I'm kind of sad that the summer's over, but it's been stressful on many different levels and I'm ready for the weather to cool down and to have my nose in a book.

Life=Complete pt.2

So last week I met the wonderful Gabi from Young,Fat, and Fabulous at the YFF Conference Meet&Greet last week; as well as many other amazing plus-size fashion bloggers ( I'll be covering that in another post really soon) So in addition to organizing a really amazing event, Gabi is also in the running to be MTV's first Twitter Jockey. Her latest challenge is to get as many celebrities as possible to follow her (@Gabifresh)

I suggested the gorgeous Amber Rose. My best friend Mickey recently met her at Russsell Simmons' 4th of July party! (she knew someone, who knew someone haha) This isn't the first time someone in her family met her, last year her sister met her at a club and Amber invited her to sit and chat; I heard that she's really sweet and down to earth (don't let the bitch face fool you)

How cool is that? I hope I'm not more boring than usual on Twitter, haha.

Life=Complete

So I tweeted about this insane dream I had about going to Japan to compete to be Joel McHale's assistant; and having Tila Tequila track us down me down and try to murder me and take my place.

when I checked my account this morning I saw this little gem in my DM box, this totally made my day.

We've Got Obsessions

A few weeks ago Nancy, Nicole and I headed out to Greenpoint to hit up the Fred Flare sample sale, by the time we got there the dirt cheap selections were sparse but that didn't stop us from taking advantage of the 25% off regular priced items in the store. We all found something that we loved, Nicole got a service bell. Nancy and gigantic cupcake mold (and spent the entire car ride back declaring her love for it)and I got an ice cream cone lamp which goes perfectly with the ice cream-y color of my walls.

The saga of my redecoration continues (I'm too lazy for my own good and the fact that I've been watching Daria for the past 2 weeks definitely has something to do with it.)

I'm currently in the beginning stages of going through my closet which is kind of the final place to conquer, that and the clothing bin under my bed, I found over 30 bags and found my old favorite my Gwen Stefani L.A.M.B. bag that she did as a collaboratoin with Lesportsac before launching the regular L.A.M.B. bag collection.

I got it while working at Macy's it was one of about 3 left and when I used my discount I think I got it for about $25 which was a steal because I remember these going for over $150 on eBay at that time.

One of my major blog obsessions lately has been, Galadarling. I've had her link saved on my del.icio.us account for awhile but never really checked up on it too often and realized what a big mistake that was, I really love the positive message she's trying to send out (I'm trying to be less negative about a lot of things.) I also missed the boat on Youtube makeup tutorials and reviews, I've spent the past week subscribing to so many new channels and then watching them on my Blu-Ray getting sucked into that Youtube vortex (you know the one where you go in to browse and watch a video or two and before you know it, you've spent 2-3 hours watching tutorials on how to do Kim Kardashian makeup, yeah it happened) some of my favorite channels are Beautycrush and Lauren Luke.

I've also been listening to Marina and the Diamonds almost non-stop for the past month (her album just officially came out in the US May 25th) along with the new Major Lazer mixtape (link), and the new Theophilus London Mixtape (link) that came out a few weeks ago.

Can't wait for my room to be done with, then I can get on with that magazine post, I'm considering doing it as a video (yay or nay?) and getting back into some sort of regular blogging schedule, and painting the bathroom I share with my brothers (considering shades in the peach, cantaloupe or yellow families)

Thanks for reading about my boring little life :-)

Memories

I've been so lazy about updating, it's been due to a little depression, scattered thoughts, laziness, reading other blogs and lack of inspiration.

I haven't forgot about my best and worst of my magazine collection post, just trying to organize that and get a new external hard drive (can't believe my other one's practically out of space!)
I recently got a new all-in-one printer and plan on saving all our old family photos, I came across this one which was one of my favorites as a kid.

I'm being held by my grandma (it's been almost 2 years since she passed away, still miss her) and my mother is holding my cousin Derby (who is currently training in Georgia and heading out to Afghanistan as an Army Medic, at the end of next month; not to mention just got married to his girlfriend of two years; I can't wait for their actual wedding when he comes back.)

This was taking on the day of our baptism, my mom and aunt (my dad's sister) decided to baptize us together, because my mom was pregnant with me when they had initially planned to baptize him and according to superstition, it's supposed to be bad luck to hold someone else's baby when you're pregnant. I wish I had a time machine, my family always threw kick ass parties back in the day :-)

MagHag

My name is Carsianny and I'm a hoarder, a magazine hoarder to be more specific. It started out simple with an issue or two a month from my older cousins who let me borrow or keep an issue of Seventeen or Sassy at the tender age of 7. I used to sleep with the Johnny Depp issue of Sassy under my pillow (how embarrassing to admit especially since I got it from my cousins years after it was published) I also remember being totally intrigued by the Kurt and Courtney cover it really is a classic in magazine publishing)

Before I knew I was 11 ordering catalogs, like Delia's and and Girlfriends LA, and subscribing to or buying Teen and YM (to name a few). Over the years they managed to become my best friends when I gave up on trying to fit in at a new school and the older sister I never had (I'm the oldest/only girl). So now as I'm in the middle of a big redecorating project I've found myself facing boxes upon boxes of magazine; under my bed, on my desk, in 2 gigantic Lucite containers in my closet, in my attic (you see where this is going.) I'm facing a decision to part with my dearest friends. It was my mother stating "You're going to have to get rid of all of these" that almost moved me to tears, how could I? My dresser I can do without, in fact the last time I got ready in front of a mirror was in December (it probably shows.)

So now I've got about 14 years of magazines to go through and decide what should be kept. First and last issues (as many a magazine has started up and/or folded within this time frame i.e. Cosmogirl, JUMP, Moxiegirl) will get first dibs, as well as those that will just make me laugh (Scott Foley and Jennifer Garner on the cover of YM, bad photoshopping, etc.) and my special binder consisting of pages ripped out from magazines I borrowed from my middle school (hehe) In the end I know it's time to part with them but parting is such sweet sorrow, unless it involves an Ebay transaction.

P.S. I'm considering a big send-off post featuring pictures of the best and worst covers from over the years Yay or Nay?

Fucking Finally

I've been reading Nylon Magazine practically since its inception and in its entire history of 11 years it's only had one face of color; Lil' Kim in 2003 (when I graduated highschool!)

That is until now, the lovely Zoe Saldana is on the April cover and looks adorable.

I really hope we don't have to wait another 7 years for this to happen again.

Reflection Eternal- In This World

So I was chatting with my bff Nicole Camacho(who btw is an amazing contemporary flutist, http://nicolecamacho.wordpress.com/) and she mention her friend Brandee Younger was recently featured in the new Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek) video for their latest single In This World. She is the harpist seen playing.

How cool is that? I've had the opportunity to hang out and go make-up shopping with Brandee, (at the Estee Lauder warehouse no less) as well as seeing her perform last year; she's a sweetheart and super talented. She's also been featured on some major records like Ryan Leslie and Cassie, just to name a few. Glad to see her getting the recognition she deserves. Check out her site: http://www.brandeeyounger.com/

I Saw a Spanish Guy Doing the Bartman

Finally the time came for SNL and Lonely Island put out 'Boombox' as the latest digital short. Now if they can get Nora Jones and do 'Dreamgirl' I'll be in heaven. Oh yeah Julian's looking good, especially with the feathers in his hair.

Thank you George Costanza

I definitely employ this method to look busy and it totally works, because I have an office mate who tells me that I look like I'm seriously contemplating something. hahaha

An Ode to the Bitchface

So I was on ONTD the other day and came across a post about the one and only Amber Rose. She was on her way to the gym and looked gorgeous as usual, I read the comments (because sometimes they're even better than the post itself.)

I noticed people commenting on her "bitch face" and I thought so the fuck what, who the fuck spends every waking moment smiling for no reason? So I ask you to join me in celebrating and appreciating the bitch face. I wrote a little haiku:

bask in my bitch face
I'm silently judging you
now go fuck yourself

I too, often get accused of having a bitchface, by friends and family as well as complete strangers. A few weeks ago at Barnes&Noble I was casually waiting on line and spacing out, when I got up to the register the cashier asked me "Do you always look that angry?" I didn't bother answering, just to keep up the illusion.

Here are some other of my favorite celebs that are accused of having perma-bitch face:

Maggie Gyllenhaal, I've loved her since Secretary and appreciate that she doesn't conform to the Hollywood standard.

Kristen Stewart, I paid practically no attention to her until just this year (I can't deal with Twilight) but with a little help from Mrs. M and seeing her in Adventureland, as well as her upcoming role as Joan Jett in the Runaways movie.

and the newest addition, Raven from this current season of RuPaul's Drag Race. She serves it.

So next time you see a girl that looks like she doesn't want to be bothered, know that she'll probably laser your head of with death stare that could rival Medusa's, if you do. With that said, Raven and I bid you good day.

She looks like the Sunday comics! She thinks she's Brenda Starr.

Just as they've done with The Clash, AC/DC and Metallica; Converse is releasing another collection of music sneakers this time in honor of Blondie. These should be out next month.

[more pics at the Source]

I'm definitely eyeing the high-tops above the other pairs, the all over zebra is my least favorite, but maybe if I saw them in person I'd think differently, I don't know. Also when I saw the high-tops I thought "What's Taylor Momsen doing there?"(I know, no soup for me!) only to remember that Deborah Harry is most likely one of her major sources of style inspiration. I'm not too sure what Debbie thinks of that

I Got A Man

haha not really, just starting thinking about the Positive K song from the 90s

Fact: Positive K also did the voice of the female responding to him in the song

She's Out of Control

Thanks for keeping my family and all those effected by the earthquake in your prayers. Luckily much of my family is fine, just trying to get on their feet. Although my family has been lucky enough to not have been seriously injured, I'm still definitely depressed thinking about so many others who haven't been so lucky. I've definitely been trying to distract myself in anyway possible especially with tv, books, movies, whatever...
I don't know why, but I'm sitting here at work procrastinating because, I'm working with dusty old books (I work in a library, boring) and the 1989 movie She's Out of Control popped into my head. It's definitely another one that I watched whenever it was on Ch. 11 as a kid.

This movie starred Tony Danza and Ami Dolenz, (who happens to be the daughter of Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees) dealt with the dad who just couldn't accept that his little girl was now a woman. I'm definitely thinking about renting it, to bask in the memories

We all know about the horror that took place on Tuesday in Haiti, I have always been proud to say that I'm Haitian-American, and although I have never been there the stories that my parents and grandmother (rest her soul) told throughout the years always made me feel close to it. It's really hard to write this especially when I'm trying to find ways to distract myself from worrying about not knowing how my aunt and uncle and much of my extended family is doing over there. Praying for the victims, my family and the countless others out there who are trying to get in contact with their families.

To Donate to Wyclef's Organization YELE Haiti

my mom's church was featured on the local news for holding a vigil, I really hope the best for the congregation because I know that their faith is strong.

and on another note Keith Olbermann once again proved why he's such an amazing journalist and person by addressing the racist hatemongers who use freedom of speech and of the press to mask their hate speech

"Come Back Jonee" and Santi

According to Pitchfork, Santigold is collaborating with Devo!! Whether this is going to be on her upcoming album hasn't been officially confirmed, but I'm so excited to hear this, I can't imagine what it's like to work with your musical idols.

In other music news, Courtney Love is trying to get Hole back together, but not; she just wants to use the name with a new lineup. I don't know what to make of this because without Eric Erlandson and Melissa Auf der Maur it's not Hole, but considering all her problems lately (and always) it might be good to take all her energy and channel it into music as opposed to illiterate and incoherent blog posts.
